The Winston School Scholarship Program
Background
The Winston School is the only college preparatory school in San Diego County for learning different students in grades five through twelve that provides education to an equal mix of privately enrolled students and publicly funded students who are placed here by a school district. The school’s commitment to this mix of students reflects its longstanding dedication to geographic, economic and ethnic diversity. The Winston program supplements the public school system and completes the full spectrum of education needed to reach that portion of the population with learning differences who would otherwise fail and/or drop out of school.

The Scholarship Program
Scholarships promote diversity within the school population by creating a student body of various economic and cultural backgrounds from neighborhoods all over Southern California, from Los Angeles to San Diego. While some families can afford to pay full tuition, other families are capable of paying a portion of Winston School’s yearly tuition. Winston is pleased to have a small fund of scholarship money available each year to eligible students. The Board of Trustees is committed to providing financial aid to at least 10% of the families who pay private tuition.

Students who are eligible for scholarship money must meet the following criteria:
  • 1. have measurable financial need based on documentation supplied in their application packets;
  • 2. have a clearly diagnosed learning difference;
  • 3. be deemed likely to contribute positively to the School community;
  • 4. be deemed likely to benefit from a specially designed educational environment.
The maximum scholarship Winston awards is $11,000 against the yearly tuition and fees of over $15,000. The average scholarship is $6,500.

Two scholarships of varying amounts are named for important Winston School leaders. The John H. Richards Memorial Fund recognizes the late physician who was one of the visionary pediatricians who founded the School and served on the Board until his untimely death in 2002. And the Mark D. Kimball Scholarship is named for Winston's 2nd Headmaster who now serves on the Board and chairs the Scholarship Committee.

Application Process
Applications can be made for scholarships throughout the year, but the deadline for the next school year is May 9th. Decisions on awards are made between May 9th and June 1. Students currently receiving scholarships must re-apply each year but normally retain scholarships as long as they continue to remain eligible.

The Scholarship Committee is composed of members of the Board and Administration of The Winston School. All of the committee's decisions are final.
