OUR PROGRAM | OUR STORY | OUR PEOPLE | ADMISSIONS | GIVING
When our family was transferred from New York to San Diego at the close of our son’s sophomore year, The Winston School in Del Mar offered our son academic excellence and the social and technological support he needed to make the grade. In addition, Winston offered fast friendship and guidance that carried into the community. We watched our son mature into a citizen with a life-long commitment to personal growth, learning, and enjoyment.

A Distinguished California School

We Welcome Your Consideration.

Winston serves students of average to above intelligence with documented learning differences which may include dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD), processing difficulties, learning disabilities, learning disorders, slow maturation or underachievement. Winston's small classes and caring teachers trained in special education are the key to helping students succeed. While all students may occasionally become frustrated by challenging assignments or projects, those with primary behavioral or emotional problems will be better served in another environment.

The purpose of the admission process is to determine if the school and the students are properly matched.

In order to help us evaluate the appropriateness of Winston, we suggest the following procedure:
  • Parents review school materials available on the school website and the school brochure and read it carefully to decide if Winston's small classes and nurturing environment may be right for their student.
  • A conference is scheduled at the school to discuss the student’s academic and personal history as well as the curriculum and activities available here. The conference should include a review of all testing data, particularly that which helps the school understand diagnoses of dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD, ADHD or other learning disabilities. Parents may also send school records in advance or bring them to the meeting. At the parents' discretion, the student may attend all, part or none of this conference.
  • A tour of Winston's small and intimate campus.
  • If Winston seems like a possible match, the student may be invited to visit classes for two days. Following this visit, parents, the school, and in some cases, the student confer about the possible admission. If the family is funded through a public school district, we ask that you gain the permission of the district before the class visit is scheduled.
  • If admission is offered, parents are encouraged to weigh the matter carefully for a few days. Winston does not believe in pressure, and will not ask for immediate decisions. We will, as a courtesy, indicate when enrollment is tight and by what date it may be necessary to make a commitment. Based on availability, students may enter Winston at any time during the school year.
