Teachers who Understand Learning Differences

Abilities Matter More than Disabilities

Sandra, a ninth grader, has trouble with auditory processing. But thanks to the visual cues that her teacher gives her, Nancy is able to understand the lesson plan. She raises her hand often during discussions, her eyes bright with curiosity.

Mark, a fourth grader, avoids the writing lesson, instead talking loudly to the student on his right. Mark has Asperger's syndrome, which makes it hard for him to socialize. After several weeks, with skilled help from his teacher and instructional assistant, Mark is able to write alongside his classmates.

The teachers at Winston realize that every child has the ability to learn and that all they might need is the right environment. And perhaps the right teacher.

The Winston School teachers can help students with disabilities to develop a better self-image, to become more motivated, and to recognize their own academic and social strengths. Their social skills can be improved and positive peer relationships can be developed. So please consider our school if you believe your child has dyslexia or needs to be tested for dyslexia, is a student with a learning disability or learning disorder, has a nonverbal learning disorder or learning disability suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), needs an ADD school or ADHD school that understands him or her, needs special education or a special education school, or would like to attend a California school in the San Diego area that understands learning disorders.

The power of teamwork is what lifts The Winston School and our students. Teachers and counselors working together help students understand their learning differences and strengths and to assume responsibility for their actions through recognizing the needs of others. Tolerance for those of diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds is an important value taught at the school. Regular assemblies and special events build community and add levity to the hard work of the school year.
