Board Members
The Winston School is a private non-profit institution
governed by an independent Board of Trustees. Its dedicated
trustees include entrepreneurs, physicians and educators
as well as Mark Kimball, the Head Emeritus. The current
President of the Board was one of the founding leaders of
The Winston School in 1988.
Board Member Biographies
Sarita Doyle Eastman, MD - President
Physician
Sarita Eastman is a developmental-behavioral pediatrician with a private practice in Carmel Valley. Dr. Eastman grew up in La Jolla, the daughter of two physicians, and is a graduate of local schools, including the University of San Diego. She obtained her MD degree from the University of California, San Francisco and returned to North County in 1972, first joining her father in practice, and subsequently a large multi-site pediatric group. She currently limits her practice to youth with disorders of attention and learning, and lectures widely to school and parent groups. Dr. Eastman is a co-author of the San Diego ADHD Project protocols for the management of ADHD in pediatric practice, and is attending physician at the Developmental-Behavioral Clinic, Children’s Hospital. She was a founder of The Winston School in 1988 and is currently serving her second term as President of the Board.
John R. French - Treasurer
Businessman / entrepreneur
John French currently serves as President and CEO of Carrtronics LLC, a technology company he founded in 1997 to provide loss prevention solutions to the retail industry. The Carlsbad-based company currently serves over forty of the largest retail companies in the world, and is active in the development of new wireless solutions that promote cost reduction and revenue gains. Mr. French has been a booster of The Winston School since its founding in 1988 and is a long-time member of the Board of Trustees, having served as President, Vice-President, Development Chair, and currently Treasurer. He is a native Californian and lives in Mission Hills with his wife Meredith, an accomplished professional photographer.
Lance Hendricks, M.D. (Secretary)
Physician / Global Activist
Lance Hendricks is an anesthesiologist in practice with Anesthesia Service Medical Group (ASMG) at Scripps Hospitals. Dr. Hendricks is a graduate of UCLA and of the University of Southern California Medical School. He joined the US Navy as a medical officer completing internship, submarine medicine and deep sea diving school and was stationed at the Submarine Base, San Diego, before his anesthesia training at UCSD. Dr. Hendricks and his wife Linda are the adoptive parents of eight children, four with significant learning differences. Dr. Hendricks joined the Winston Board in 1991 after his son Brent enrolled at the school. He is also a director of the Scripps Health-Fiji Alliance Project and travels to the islands three times a year to provide hands-on clinical care and to organize visiting consultants to supplement the training program at the Fiji Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
Mark D. Kimball - Headmaster Emeritus
Educator
Mark Kimball was the second Headmaster of The Winston School and served from 1991-2005. At the time of his successful recruitment to Winston, Mark was Associate Headmaster at the Gow School in South Wales, New York, the oldest and premier boarding institution for Learning Different students in the United States. Gow was widely acclaimed for the excellence of its curriculum and Mark was given much of the credit for its reputation. After a 40-year career as teacher and administrator in which he built three school and was well known as a speaker at regional and national conferences, Mark is retired. An avid golfer, he lives with his wife Georgann, a former teacher at Winston, and their lively Jack Russell terrier, and enjoys the regular invasions of two even more active grandchildren.
Linda Pinney
Entrepreneur
Linda Pinney is the Founder and Chief Business Office of Asteres, Inc., the creator of the first prescription pick-up kiosk for retail pharmacy. She is also Founder and Chairman of The StartUp Lab, Inc., a venture development company serving venture capital firms and venture-backed companies. Prior to that, Linda served ten years as Vice President of Business Development for Pyxis Corporation, in which capacity she successfully developed, patented and led Pyxis into new product offerings, and took Pyxis outside healthcare to a licensing and equity deal with SupplyPro, Inc. Pyxis enjoyed a successful IPO in 1992 and was sold to Cardinal Health for close to $1 billion in 1996. Earlier, Linda was in business development for Sharp HealthCare and Centinela Hospital. She earned a BS degree in Genetics from UC Davis, and Masters in Business and Healthcare Administration from USC.
Lisa Richards
Business owner / Community Activist
Lisa Richards leads a multi-division catering and special events business in San Diego, including Festivities Catering and Special Events, Picnic People, TK&A Custom Catering and Simcha San Diego Kosher Catering. Ms. Richards is also the mother of two Winston School graduates and has a "passion to advocate for children with learning differences." She has been active in the San Diego community for many years with non-profit causes, including Fleet Week San Diego, the Holiday Bowl and the Alzheimer Society, as well as for Winston.
Michael Roston (Vice President)
Developer
Michael Roston is a real estate developer and builder of thousands of homes in the southwest, including planned communities in southern California and Arizona. Mike grew up in La Costa in the first house at the famous Resort developed by his father. He graduated from Carlsbad High, served in the Coast Guard, and then returned to college at USC and at USD. At 21, Mike became the youngest real estate broker in California, and founded his own company, TRC, in 1995. Michael has served as a member of the Winston Board since 1990, providing leadership on the Headmaster Search Committees which brought both Mark Kimball and Mike Peterson to Winston. He lives in La Costa with his wife Ko, owner and publisher of Orange Coast Magazine.
Geert Schmid-Schonbein, Ph.D
Professor, UCSD
Geert Schmid-Schönbein is Professor and Director of the Microcirculation Laboratory, Department of Bioengineering, at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Schmid-Schönbein received his undergraduate degree at Liebig University in his native Germany and his graduate education at UCSD where he joined the faculty in 1979 and has remained ever since. A recipient of national and international recognition for his research, Dr. Schmid-Schönbein has also been honored as Teacher of the Year at UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering. He and his wife Renate live in Del Mar and are parents of Peter, a 2004 graduate of Winston who now attends UCSD.
Ria Scoma
Realtor
Ria Scoma is an award-winning real estate broker with Coldwell Banker, Del Mar. After many years as marketing director for a local real estate firm, Ria owned and operated her own marketing consulting business in La Jolla for 10 years. She then elected to enter sales, handling residential real estate in the Palm Spring-Palm Desert area where she quickly became a top producer. Since returning to San Diego several years ago, Ria has maintained her status as a consistent top agent and also has a history of dedicated community service. A resident of Cardiff, Ria takes pride in her four married children and three grandchildren, all of whom reside in San Diego County.
Ron Stolberg, Ph.D
Psychologist / Professor
Ron Stolberg is a licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in Carmel Valley, as well as professor of psychology at Alliant International University. Dr. Stolberg first came to The Winston School in 1994 as a young counselor interested in children with learning differences; later, as a post-doctoral fellow, he became director of the counseling staff. Since his retirement from Winston to found a practice specializing in adolescent therapy and assessment, Dr. Stolberg has continued to assist our counselors and teachers with specialized training pertinent to Winston students. Ron and his wife Darlene, also a former Winston counselor, live with their children in Carmel Valley.
Louise Ukleja
Businesswoman / educational visionary
Louise Ukleja is the founder of Opportunity Schools, an educational non-profit committed to unlocking the potential of students with learning challenges. Opportunity Schools, which began in 1990 in a private school in Cypress, California, is now dedicated to delivering programming, training and support to other private schools around the country to equip them to reach this student population. Louise’s personal mission statement is to “ignite potential” and she has incorporated that into her leadership role in a variety of venues in the non-profit world. As a family member, she serves on the board of the Bonita Bay Group, the largest developer of master-planned communities in Southwest Florida. She is a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in Business Administration.
