| Winston came to us exactly when we needed it. The school
not only created an emotionally safe environment for our son, but it
also provided an educational program that was geared to his specific learning
styles and needs. The Winston staff is exceptional, and are always
available to both my son and me.

Academics
The Winston School provides a challenging, coherent and
meaningful curriculum for our population of students who
learn differently. At Winston, teachers not only teach
subject matter, but they use the curriculum to teach
effective study skills and successful task performance. The
goal in each classroom is to teach students how to learn, to
enjoy learning and to become life-long learners. These
skills reflect the Winston School's ongoing school-wide
learning expectations of academic proficiency and
achievement, positive self-esteem, social and problem
solving skills, and effective communication.
All courses involve teaching effective communication skills
through oral and/or written expression. Because class sizes
remain small (less than 14 in a class), oral participation
is an integral part of most courses. Students are expected
to participate actively by asking and responding to
questions and to engage in group discussions. In many
courses, oral reporting is also part of the student's
grade. Written expression is part of all core academic
courses. Subject area teachers understand the need to
incorporate the teaching of written language skills into all
student coursework, not just English classes.
The Winston curriculum follows the state guidelines with
appropriate modifications made to meet student needs. Most
students complete a sequence of classes that meets
admissions requirements to the California State University
system and similar colleges and universities.
