Job Experience
Students gain incredible insights into their academic work
and enthusiasm for what the future may bring when they
experience the workplace as interns or employees. They learn
responsibility, social skills and how to apply what they
know to new situations. Often when they return to their
work at school, it all makes a little more sense to them.
From traditional entry-level positions at movie theaters,
fast food restaurants or grocery stores to more unusual
positions such as stock person at an off-road vehicle
warehouse, electrical work at a custom car and airplane
detailer, students have a variety of job opportunities. Many
placements have developed into regular jobs for Winston
students and even in some cases, the beginnings of careers.
In short, the opportunities for growth are considerable.
WorkAbility is a program funded and administered by the
California Department of Education. The goals are to provide
pre- employment training, employment placement and other
skills that allow
students to make successful transitions to post-secondary
life. The program is open primarily to those students who
are publicly funded, but a small number of students who pay
private tuition are also eligible.
WorkAbility is a natural fit with Winston’s mission of preparing our
students for transition to other environments. The program includes
assessments such as learning styles inventories, career and interest
assessments, and skills analysis. Students receive
pre-employment training such as job search skills and mock
interviewing and then progress to employment.
The Winston School has been funded for a WorkAbility I grant
since 1996. |
