| I believe it was the unique mix of the student body, faculty and the magic of the Del Mar village that melded together to create what I'm proud to call my Alma Mater, and dare I say, my savior.

An Overview of the Winston School
Every Child has The Potential to be Great.
The Winston School was founded in 1988 by a group of visionary pediatricians and parents in the San Diego, California area who realized that the needs of many bright children who learned differently were not being met in traditional settings. Over the past 18 years, Winston has educated hundreds of students, preparing them for college and for the working world. Students who struggle with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, specific learning disabilities or learning disorders, nonverbal learning disorders and slow maturation find what they have long needed in Winston's small, safe and caring environment: Intellectual challenge with sufficient academic support to develop their strengths which allows them to excel.
Winston's unique program for grades 5-12 allows for challenging academic work to be undertaken with the help of counselors, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists who work seamlessly with classroom teachers (certified in special education) to ensure a successful high school experience. Academic classes emphasize skill building and readily available technology and software help accommodate diverse learning styles. A strong commitment to the visual arts, music, drama and computer graphics and animation complements the academic program and provides many students with a clear professional direction after graduation. Winston also has a vibrant activities program which promotes self-esteem, helps students apply lessons from the classroom, promotes the building of social skills and allows students to find an interest and another place to succeed. Recent graduates have attended Dartmouth College, California State University Long Beach, Whittier College and Fashion Careers College.
Located in the California village of Del Mar, 10 miles from San Diego, one block from the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Winston's setting inspires students and provides wonderful opportunities for science and art field trips. Teachers and counselors help students understand their learning differences and strengths and assume responsibility for their actions through recognizing the needs of others. Tolerance for those of diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds is an important value taught at the school. Regular assemblies and special events build community and add levity to the hard work of the school year.
Headmaster Mike Peterson brings 24 years of experience teaching students with learning differences and leads a talented and dedicated staff. Small classes, multi-sensory teaching approaches and individual attention allow our students to succeed by diminishing or bypassing their weaknesses and enhancing their natural gifts.
One testament to Winston's success is that families have relocated from as far away as San Francisco, Reno, St. Louis and Tennessee in order to attend the program, and some students commute each day from Long Beach and the Mexican border. Well known author and Winston parent, Debra Ginsberg recorded her son's struggle to find an appropriate educational environment in her novel, Raising Blaze, before finding Winston. In her words,
“Academically and emotionally, Winston rescued my son from a certain downward educational slide and improved the quality of his life immeasurably. The Winston School has been nothing short of a blessing--for my family and for so many others.”
